    Microwave And Convection Oven

The microwave oven has given a new impetus to the culinary activities in the modern kitchen. This utility has become an unavoidable kitchen appliance. In a hectic lifestyle, a microwave oven is a word synonymous with convenience.

In the early stages of its introduction, it was primarily used for reheating stored or refrigerated food and to make popcorn. The main advantage of a microwave oven is that it can heat the food without heating the cookware directly. The food becomes hot first and then the cookware or the pan gets heated through the food in it. This phenomenon is a unique feature of the utility over the conventional ovens or stoves. In the subsequent periods it has become multipurpose equipment. Many new features were incorporated to facilitate baking, roasting, grilling and toasting apart from the usual cooking methods. The users are also benefited with the efficiency and economy that are offered by the microwave oven.

The most popular type of microwave oven is the small or portable one which can be placed on the kitchen worktop. It is known as compact size microwave oven and used for defrosting or heating food items. The bigger model is the medium sized one which can accommodate casseroles etc to cook vegetable and meat. The largest one is for cooking food in a large scale. Another model is the built in microwave oven, which can be installed only by professional technicians. The power consumption depends on the size of the oven. When the compact size requires 500 to 1000 watts of electricity, the largest size will work on wattage of 2000 or more. The special feature is the convection oven which will be equipped with a fan to circulate heat evenly so that the heating or cooking process will be faster. This type is an ideal one for small eateries or large households. Both built-in type and convection ovens are very expensive. They can be used for browning and broiling the meat in the course of cooking.

But in totality, the microwave oven is used for its efficiency and convenience and not very much for the qualitative advantages. The dieticians recommend microwave oven only for heating, browning and caramelisation. Many experts warn that nutritious values of vegetable will be lost in microwave cooking. Some reports caution that a microwave oven will divest the vitamin contents and phytonutrients of the food due to the radiation. Regular intake of food cooked in microwave oven will cause obesity and related diseases.

Like many other facilities available to those who lead a busy lifestyle, the microwave oven may also contribute to certain hazards. The best option is to use it selectively. It can be used for reheating, melting and making popcorn. Many new features are incorporated in the modern versions like facility to programme the cooking process. Timers are provided to cut off the power once the cooking is completed.

Maintenance of microwave ovens is important. The utility should be cleaned immediately after the use. The filters provided are easily removable to facilitate periodical cleaning. The turn table should be taken out and cleaned. Proper maintenance will ensure durability of the oven. The user should carefully read all the instructions in the manual issued by the manufacturers along with the product.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of the convection/microwave oven. I want to go buy one right now, but I want to make sure that I am doing the right thing before I replace my old microwave oven.

      • ANSWER:
This might not be the perfect answer, but as I understand it a convection oven superheats the air inside and that, combined with microwaves can brown, bake, and cook at a more complete level than just microwaves alone.

If you've ever cooked pizza in an old-style microwave, you'll know the crust comes out like wet cardboard. So combine the speed of microwaving, with the heat of the convection (heated air) and you have a better crust, and more versatile cooking instrument. HTH

    13. QUESTION:
Convection/Toaster Microwave Oven, which one do you prefer?
I'm curious as to what experiences people have with Convection Microwave Ovens, I need it to make toast, on normal size bread and on larger breads and to use like a microwave to pop popcorn, hot water for tea, heat up foods quickly... etc

So far my online search has led me to believe that the Sharp models are the better made ones, but what do you think? and what are you experiences?

      • ANSWER:
The combined convection-microwave is becoming very popular in the newer built homes. I have heard nothing but good things about them. You will need to study the booklet as the convection does not work the way a regular oven does. I'm not sure are toast. You might want to see one in action before you buy.

    14. QUESTION:
If I buy a new combo microwave/convection oven now, will it live 24 years like the old one that died today?
Yup, after 24 years it decided to blow sparks today and cease breathing. I'm heartbroken. The combination cooking using convection and microwave together, produced amazing results. And the convection on it's own was the best oven I ever used. RIP darling. Do they make them like they used to and if I buy one today, how long will it last?

      • ANSWER:
No, they don't make them like they used to. Now that the technology has fully matured, as well as due to advancements in engineering, it is easier to make one significantly cheaper that will, on the average, last only as long as necessary. "As necessary" probably is based on statistical info like how long the average person wants to keep a microwave, or what design life or mean time between failure (MTBF) should we design for to maximize profits. Kinda sux, huh? Back in the day, there were more unknowns, which meant that microwaves had to be basically overengineered in at least some areas.

    18. QUESTION:
Does using a combination of Microwave & Convection powers operating concurrently work as well as normal oven?
Some microwave ovens have a convection feature so they can work like an ordinary oven. Some have the ability to microwave and cook the conventional way at the same time so it is faster but browned like it has been cooked in a normal oven.

Is the end result as good as cooking in an oven or something half-way between as good as an oven and microwaved?

      • ANSWER:
In my opinion it is just as good. I have one and I love it.
When a convection/microwave oven are combined, the food is cooked simultaneously by microwave energy and by a flow of heated air. Now you have the benefit of fast cooking in the microwave while giving the food a brown outer coloring, along with other features. A convection oven can crisp the surface of some foods by first drying their surface via the circulation of hot air in the cooking process.
I usually use the combo when cooking chicken. It goes faster and tastes great.
You must remember however, that you still need to check the meat for the proper temp so you know it it done properly.
The best feature for me is in summer I can bake without heating the house.

    19. QUESTION:

    20. QUESTION:
i have a microwave convection oven.can i use aluminium cup cake moulds and paper liners whilst baking?

it is a microwave, convection, grill oven and the manual that came with it says okay to aluminum pans in the convection mode.but since have never tried making muffins in individual pans and minus paper liners.would want them to bake without burning, come out of the pan easily and look good too.

      • ANSWER:
i have an oven like that and put aluminum in it all the time. on convection its heat only and because its convection it cooks without burning. my biscuits always come out perfect, never burned one, works way better than a regular oven. a little non stick spray is all thats needed. the inside of my oven is metal and i put aluminum in it even on microwave. as long as the food mostly covers it i have never seen a spark from it. its steel you cant put in a microwave, not aluminum. it can be done as long as food is on top of it,

    21. QUESTION:
Can you use regular metal bakeware in a microwave/convection oven?
Or, do I need to go out and replace all my 'newly purchased bakeware' with a particular type of bakeware?

      Thank you.

      • ANSWER:
        NO WAY!

I have a Microwave/Convection and made that mistake once...
Within 25 seconds of turning it on... it started to burn and smoke.

        Use glass bakeware or silicone.

    22. QUESTION:
      What's the best convection/microwave oven?
Leaning toward Sharp and Amana. Would like to stay under 0, with a small to medium footprint and minimum 900 watts. Is the convection feature even worth it? I have an oven -- just don't like it. Uncomplicated operation would be great. Any info or ideas welcomed. Thanks.

      • ANSWER:
I had a convection oven once and I just couldn't get the hang of it. The problem is that a convection oven blows hot air throughout the oven, rather than having a burner that radiates throughout the oven. This causes the heated air to be forced up to the top instead of just radiating out evenly.

What I experienced is that uncovered dishes would then get burned on the top. But, the part that was in the dish or pan was protected from the hot air by the sides and bottom of the dish. So, it would be undercooked.

Before you get a convection oven, talk with people who own one and find out what their experiences have been. If they have had similar experiences, then you might want to reconsider getting one and just splurge on a high-end microwave.

As far as a microwave, I have a GE signature series model that has worked extremely well for a few years now. They're expensive (about 0. But, GE does make some excellent kitchen appliances).

    23. QUESTION:
i have a 'hinari lifestyle' combination microwave, convection oven and grill. How do i use the defrost?
I have lost the instructions and there is no actual 'defrost button' any ideas? when i press microwave i can choose between p-90 and p-10 but no def for defrost. Any ideas anyone?

      • ANSWER:
Look up the manufacturer's web site. At the very least you will find a way to contact them for help, maybe the manual will be there on line for you.

    24. QUESTION:
Do you use a convection microwave oven?
Just wondering. They can be expensive, but I'm really thinking about getting one before summer so when I cook it doesn't heat up the entire kitchen.

If you have one, do you like it? How well does it cook (the convection part, and the microwave part)? How much should I expect to pay for a good one?

      Thanks!

      • ANSWER:
My son has one and it is awesome. You can actually brown stuff in it and it acts more like an oven than a microwave.

Kevin got one that was four in one...oven micro convection and speed oven....they all have their own specialty.

It is perfect for him.....and I would LOVE To have one ...however it is not as big as a regular oven and you can't cook big things in it...like a 20 lb turkey etc.

If you don't cook big things like that...then it is great. Cooking is my passion so I would love one of them along with my two ovens. I cook for everyone and need it.

I think Kevin paid about 700 bucks for his.. but it was more than what you are thinking

        I love them.....

        http://shopping.yahoo.com/s:Microwave%20Ovens

Here you can compare and read reviews on all of them.....and they vary from over 100 to 1500 bucks....

how long to cook and what temp? Is it necessary to make any changes to my favorite receipe?

I don't know! Look at this recipes. I never baked anything on microwave:
        BANANA NUT BREAD

        1 c. brown sugar
        1/2 c. butter
        2 eggs
        1 c. mashed bananas
        1 tbsp. lemon juice
        1 tsp. grated lemon rind
        2 c. flour
        1 tbsp. baking powder
        3/4 tsp. salt
        1 c. macadamia nuts, chopped
        1 c. raisins

Cream brown sugar, butter, eggs and bananas; stir in lemon juice and lemon rind. Beat in dry ingredients. Stir in nuts and raisins. Line bottom of glass loaf pan with waxed paper. Pour in batter. Cook in microwave oven 6 minutes. Rotate pan a quarter turn. Cook 6 minutes more. Let stand on flat surface 10 minutes.

        Microwave Banana Bread

        1 1/2 .c flour
        3/4 c. sugar
        1/2 c. plus 2 tbsp. soft margarine

    29. QUESTION:
Can a stronger magnetron be put in a 1996 GE Profile Microwave/Convection oven?
This is an over the range model JVM1090AW001. The repair man said that the original replacement part isn't made now. He wants to put in a stronger magnetron (1000?). I think the original is 600. The appliance looks new and matches the color of other appliances.

      • ANSWER:
This is an area in electronics for which I have no experience. I believe that the power output by the magnetron is determined by the circuit it is used in, and by the power supply that provides power to it. It is not determined by the magnetron itself. However, if the rating of the magnetron is too small, it will overheat and fail prematurely.

Putting a "stronger" magnetron in the microwave is probably OK, in the same sense that putting a larger radiator in your car is OK, as long as it fits. It will just operate cooler because it is not being stressed as highly. Parts substitution is commonplace in both the appliance and automotive businesses. If it shows up in the catalog or parts list, it is OK to use.

Sears sells parts online for many manufacturers including GE. Their web site indicates that the replacement part number for the magnetron is WB27X10585:
        http://www3.sears.com/scripts/webparts.dll?Pricing?Count=1&Parts=PartNum0%3DWB27X0706%26Div0%3D0022%26Pls0%3D364%26imageKey0%3D1428%26suffix0%3DNA%26&partsreportid=0
The price through Sears is 9.96.

        Partstore.com sells it for .00:
        http://www.partstore.com/Part/General%20Electric/General%20Electric/WB27X10585.aspx?s=sspro

There is an ebay store that has it for .99:

    31. QUESTION:
Please explain to me the difference between a convection oven and a microwave oven.?

      • ANSWER:
The answers above are good but I wanted to add a couple more thoughts in case you are trying to decide between the two.

They are for 2 completely different types of cooking. And while they are both supposed to "cut" your cooking time, that reduction is relative to what you are cooking.

Microwaves are not good for things you want to brown. They make foods hot by causing the molecules to vibrate so fast they create friction heat. Great for leftovers and things like hotdogs which are basically just being reheated. Although the line of microwaveable food out there that is designed for this style of cooking is getting ever larger.

Convection cooking is the baker/roasters best friend. The circulating air that makes convection work, prevents hot spots in your oven and you get even heating... just what you need for perfect baked goods like evenly browned cookies and level cakes. You don't see the reduced cooking time in quick bake items like cookies. Where time reduction shines with the convection oven is the long bake items.. like chickens and roasts. Here the circulating air not only speeds up cooking, it brown it faster, sealing in the juices more quicky as well. The book that comes with the oven will give you the new cooking times you will use for your roasts and long cook meals. It also browns casseroles beautifully.

Can't decide and love them both? There are several manufacturers that make counter top and built-in microwave/convection combinations.. and some even let you use both types of cooking at once. Your frozen Stouffer's lasagne will come out microwave quick and oven browned.

    32. QUESTION:

    33. QUESTION:
should i buy a mini oven or microwave/convection oven?
OK, here is the deal, i have a good microwave oven and now i need a 'mini oven' because my main build in oven is soo BIG so when i grill only 1 piece of steak it will take long time use alot of electricity and BIG grill tray to clean.

question comes down to... buying a mini-oven for roasting/grilling small meals, or replace my microwave oven with 2 feature oven (more space saving but those ovens are expensive)!
anyone use those ovens before? are they reliable and easy to clean?

      • ANSWER:
I have the 2 feature ovens, 1 convention oven and 1 regular oven..I tend to use the regular oven all the time so I would buy the mini-oven which is less expensive and can do the same job..

    34. QUESTION:
Does a convection oven use more electricity than a microwave oven?
I'm just trying to make sure I won't set the house and neighborhood ablaze. Although it would be nice to catch-up with the boys at the fire dept.

      • ANSWER:
Yes, a convection oven uses more electricity than a microwave oven. It takes more energy to heat the air to heat the food than it does to nuke the food and jiggle it on the molecular level into getting hot (which is what microwaves do).

        But.

The even, smooth heat of a convection oven produces an evenly-cooked product --especially bread and pastry with a nice thin but strong crust. Nothing works for desserts and gourmet items as well as a convection oven, so if you are a great cook, a chef, consider getting one!

    36. QUESTION:
Which method of cooking do you prefer microwave, convection oven, barbeque, deep fryer, skillet?
Every cook has something way they cook everything with and it works for them so which of these methods suits your cooking skills.

      serious answers.
should have added Wok. crockpot, smoker, over and open fire, kettle, cooking like the puritans did, whatever method you prefer tell us about it.

      • ANSWER:
I really like the speed of the microwave, but I cannot STAND the taste of reheated meat when it's done in the microwave. I don't know what it is.. it all just gets this funky taste.

I like the deep fryer for some things (like fried corn.. you dip a mini corn cob into lightly beaten egg and then into a mixture of flour, salt, and pepper, and then fry it for about 4 to 5 minutes.. delish!!) but I tend to get burned so I usually have my husband deal with it. :) Plus fried food is bad for you.. sigh.. it's great for fries though!

My husband cooks well on the grill, but I always worry about undercooking meat.. so I tend to burn it or it's really dry. :( My husband cooks a mean steak! My dad cooks well too! He taught my husband!

I haven't had the pleasure of using a convection oven yet. I've used regular gas and electric ovens though.. you've really got to get to know your gas oven and exactly how to adjust times and temps! The electric oven is okay.. when you don't want to stand there cooking all day. And I like baked potatoes/sweet potatoes.

Skillet/stovetop is probably my fave or at least it's what I usually use. It's pretty versatile.

I also have a George Foreman grill. It works well with things like cornish hens and filet minon.. but we tried doing pork chops and it just dried the crap out of them.

I wish I could use my crock pot more often, but no one in my family likes pot roast or soup!

We also use a rice cooker REGULARLY. ;) I'm half-Korean. My husband didn't know what good rice was (he was forced to eat instant rice) until he met me. Same goes for meatloaf and a lot of other things... his parents grew up during the Depression (he was born when they were in their 40s and 50s) so they like to cook everything to DEATH. I dunno.. my grandparents grew up then too but they don't cook so horribly. ?

    37. QUESTION:
      Microwave/Convection oven questions?
      Couple questions,
I have a microwave/convection oven combo and tried to cook with it the other day. The recipe required to cook for 35 minutes at 425F. The problem was that my 'oven' only goes up to 400F so my questions are, how would I have converted the time properly to see how long I would need to cook at the lower temp?
Cause I cooked it for an hourish and well didnt come out well, didnt really cook, and had to zap it in the microwave to cook it through.

This is my only oven, cause I dont have access to an oven so I am hopeing I can master using this.

      • ANSWER:
You sort of have to just do what you did. Be your own judge. (kinda like making toast, when it's done, it's done) If it looks done then great.

If you start cooking using your own sense of time, and measurement, you will become a pro in no time at all.
I don't even own a measuring spoon or cup. I make all kinds of fancy foods just using eye and hand for judgements.
        You will become expert!

What are some college dorm room easy meals with a small convection oven and/or a microwave?
I am a student in college and I am living in the dorms! I am tired of school food and can't afford to eat out! I only have a microwave, small convection oven, and a very small fridge! I'm looking for meals I can make that are better for you than a TV dinner!

I buy Continental packet pasta. It is really easy to make, just cook it on the stove. You will need Milk, butter and water. I also add vegies in to make it more healthy

I've just learnt that fish is actually really inexpensive and easy to make. Just buy it prepacked from the supermarket, fry it on each side. Ta-da and add pre made sald or vegies.

Buy those Weight watchers meals but add more vegies in to make it more healthy.

Jacket potato - Cook a large potato for 5 mins. Cut the top of a potato, scoop the inside of the potato out, mix that with cheese, diced ham and shallots. The top with butter. Put the top of the potato back on, put in microwave for another 30secs, then eat! Yum!

        Canned soup..

    43. QUESTION:
Can a convection oven do the same things a microwave oven does, like popcorn and reheating, and boiling water?

      • ANSWER:
Yes, but it would take longer. But, you wouldn't want to, just like you wouldn't want to boil water in a regular oven.

A convection oven has advantages over a normal oven, faster heating, more even. You wouldn't use it the same way you would a microwave.

        Each has their different uses.

    44. QUESTION:
how to bake a cake in a LG microwave convection oven?
my cake turns out rubbery...and i got not recipe book...anyone who knows pleae give me the best never fail recipe

      • ANSWER:
Preheat the oven on "convection mode" at 180 degree C.

Grease the cake tin with oil/butter.

Sieve flour and baking powder together in a bowl and keep aside.

Beat butter, sugar and egg till fluffy and creamy in another bowl.

Slowly mix the sieved flour mixture in the beaten egg mixture. Add milk to make smooth batter.

You can add the required essence now.

Pour the cake batter into the greased cake dish. Bake it at a lower rack on one 180 degree C preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes at convection mode.

        Allow to cool.

        TIPS:

        Preheating is very important

To avoid a dry or dehydrated rubbery cake, ensure that the cake batter is of a thinner ribbon consistency i.e. the batter should fall off from a height in a ribbon shape.

You can adjust the consistency by adding more milk.

        Have a good day!!

    45. QUESTION:
what is the difference between convection, grill, microwave oven and a normal oven?
what these other functions can give me which one i should prefer if i will be using it for baking cakes breads reheating food pizzas popcorns.

      • ANSWER:
Convection ovens/fan ovens augment a traditional oven by circulating heated air using a high temperature fan. By moving hot air past the food, convection ovens can operate at a lower temperature than a standard conventional oven and they can cook food more quickly.

A grill is a device or surface used for cooking food, usually fueled by gas or charcoal. Grilling is a form of cooking that involves direct heat.

A microwave oven, or microwave, is a kitchen appliance employing microwave radiation primarily to cook or heat food. Microwave ovens have revolutionized food preparation since their use became widespread in the 1970s. However, a microwave is limited because it cannot "brown" food and heats unevenly.
A convection oven is best for baking.
A microwave is perfect for reheating leftovers and popping popcorn.
And a grill is ideal, in my opinion, for cooking meats.
